What is a protein shake?

Simply, a protein shake is a protein supplement product and a version of a “protein fortified food”. Protein shakes are made by mixing an isolated protein-based powder with a liquid of choice.

Scientists began figuring out how to isolate, or, extract, protein molecules from standard food items almost 200 years ago. They’ve come a long way since then, and now our bodies have access to the luxuries of fast absorbing and easily digestible protein. These isolated protein molecules are added as independent ingredients to supplemental food products- also called “protein fortified foods”. Ingesting protein fortified foods is a highly effective way for individuals to add much needed protein to their diet. And protein, as a basic nutritional necessity, cannot be overstated. Our bodies are made of cells, and each of those cells are fundamentally constructed from protein molecules. Proteins play essential roles in tissue growth and repair, metabolic health, brain function, and much more.
